  1. Wonderful willow! 5 Star Review

Posted by on 12th May 2025

I had a little experience with willow from a school fedge project. We moved into our new build house in November, and had a typical new build lawn - turf plonked on top of a solid pan of terrible, hard soil, that spent the winter under water that had nowhere to go. The blank slate was great, but I’m horrifically impatient and wanted it to look like an established garden in a hurry. I knew willow likes moist soil and was hoping it would pull the water out, but was a little worried about whether we could get the whips into the hard soil. I was originally looking for a kit, for just a tunnel, but the bundle of oodles of 3m whips and the jute and cable tie packs allowed me to be a bit more ambitious and worked out far cheaper. The whips were so healthy they patiently waited in the raised bed I plonked them into whilst I faffed with each little construction and got the soil soft enough to work with. I chopped up some of them and was quite heavy handed with bending them and shoving them into the hard ground, thinking I’d replace the ones that I murdered. I put a few into the raised beds, which was easier, but I then had the concern of the willow not getting deep enough to take root or falling over in the wind. We secured a few in the windiest spots and made a few adjustments. Even the most abused whips have survived and are sprouting, despite some haphazard watering and the odd football impact. The whips were perfectly straight so I was only limited by my imagination. The kits have instructions that may have helped me achieve a more professional design, but having lots of willow to play with, lots of inspiration on the website and online, and some surprisingly inspired boys, I’m looking forward to using my new willow growth for future projects; I can see an arbour in our future, and wouldn’t hesitate to order more willow from you for that.
